gabriela is a creative soul who didn’t love painting or drawing as a child. She also didn’t write stories or plays—although she directed one at eleven and won a heart-shaped purple balloon for it. Nor did she grow up watching advertising because it didn’t exist in Cuba, where she was born and lived for the first twenty-two years of her life. Yep, that’s a long time without seeing a single ad.

Instead, she wanted to be a dancer—until that dream was crushed by an old-school teacher who decided she didn’t look enough like a giraffe. Still, gabriela had an enormous need to express herself, and in her search for a medium that felt right, she somehow ended up in design school.

Fast forward ten years, and she’s experimented with all sorts of crafts—including the witchy kind. These days, writing is where she has the most fun.

gabriela is also living proof that it’s never too late to learn new things—like riding a bike in your 30s (with no permanent knee damage).
